Susanne Sommer (Sosu)

knitwear designer Teacher Austria
Meet Susanne Sommer, a passionate knitter and knitwear designer from Austria.

She loves quick and easy projects as much as super-sized shawls and garments in lightweight yarns. Susanne likes combining colours and textures with unusual construction methods to create colourful, practical and fun knitwear.

Brioche, short-rows and i-cords are some of her favourite techniques and she thinks that no hand-knit wardrobe is complete without knit jewellery.
7 sense-ible questions for Susanne
1) What are your favourite views, sights or reads such as books, movies or others?
As in all aspects of my life, I find variety exciting. In colours, I like vibrant, intense shades in combination with muted neutrals, greys or with black & white. After concrete and steel in the city, I always look forward to being at home in the countryside, surrounded by hills, meadows and forests. After a zombie-horror movie, I enjoy watching a comedy.

2) What are your favourite feels/things to touch?
A kitten that snuggles against me while I joyfully knit with very soft yarn. Sun and summer rain on my skin. Taking a stroll barefoot through the garden.

3) What puts your life in balance?
Variety brings me in balance! Life has so many sides and aspects, the world so many facets. Having the opportunity to try myself, to make new experiences and to find myself over and over again, keeps me in balance. But taking a break from time to time to breathe and periods of quietness are equally important.

4) Favourite odours/smells/perfumes?
Citrus fruits and mint – these flavours are simply refreshing and get me going. Without fresh air, I am unable to function!

5) Favourite tastes/flavours/food?
Most importantly - freshness! Crispy vegetables and sun-ripened fruits are crucial for me as a vegan. I love to cook and go for meals when travelling. But my favourite taste, as strange as it may seem, is cold, fresh water.

6) Favourite sounds such as music or others?
Usually, there is so much going on in my head that I am looking for silence when working. Music isn’t a background noise for me, but something that I consciously listen to. Therefore it has to match my mood. I used to like harder bands. At the moment, I like listening to Wanda or Bilderbuch.

7) Favourite quote
“Do more of what makes you happy!” It isn’t really a quote, but it is my inspiration to enjoy every day to the fullest and to follow my path. As far as my knitting is concerned, my motto is: “I rib, so you don’t have to do it!”
