Blue-Faced Leicester sheep evolved near Hexham in Northumberland at the beginning of the 20th century. It is a long-wool breed. They are recognisable by their broad Roman noses and the dark blue skin, which can be seen through the white hair, hence the name. Blue-Faced Leicester are polled. Their heads and legs are free of wool.
Their fleece is rather light with an average weight of 2,5 to 4,5 lbs. (1 to 2 kg). The long, curly locks have a length of approx. 3 to 6 in. (8 to 15 cm) and show a lovely creamy-soft lustre. The fibre diameter ranges between 24 to 28 microns. The wool makes a strong, smooth yarn with a good drape. The yarn is equally popular for sock knitting and felting.
Today the breed is mainly found in England, the United States and Canada.
